Government Polytechnic Sheikhpura was established in 2016 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of Bihar, formerly known as the Department of Science, Technology & Technical Education (DSTTE), with the vision of developing a strong and effective technical education system in the state. The institute is affiliated with the State Board of Technical Education (SBTE), Patna, and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The institute is committed to providing quality technical education by integrating academic excellence, practical learning, research, and industry-oriented training. Government Polytechnic Sheikhpura possesses all the essential infrastructure and facilities required to emerge as a centre of excellence in diploma engineering education.

The campus is equipped with smart classrooms, well-established laboratories, workshop facilities, a modern library with reading room facilities, computer laboratories, internet connectivity, and other academic amenities that support the overall development of students. The institute emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prepare competent diploma engineers for industry and higher education.

To ensure high-quality teaching and academic standards, the institute has dedicated and well-qualified faculty members recruited through a transparent and rigorous selection process conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).

At present, the institute offers Diploma programmes in Civil Engineering (CE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), each with an approved intake of 60 students. From the academic session 2026–27, the institute has also received AICTE approval to start the Diploma programme in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) with an intake capacity of 60 students.

Admission to the three-year Diploma programmes is conducted through the Diploma Certificate Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE) – Polytechnic Engineering (PE), organized by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). Eligible candidates are allotted seats through the centralized online counselling process conducted by BCECEB based on merit.
